District 12 for most of my life, until it was destroyed in the war. It was one of the furthest from the Capitol.

i'm sure this is true for most people but it sounds like eudio is acting as quite the escape for you.

[ coming from a man who's own home world just teeters on the edge of war. he means to be condoling. ]

[ She imagines that's a big reason why people agree to come, aside from whatever the representatives promise them.

A moment or two later she sends another text. ]

I didn't realize escape was going to be so unbearably boring when I agreed to come here, though. If I had known, I might've given it more thought.

[ She absolutely would not have given it more thought, but she's trying again for a joke. It's still a foreign thing to her, even if it's in the form of a dry, sarcastic comment. ]

[ he smiles, just a little, at the joke. he knows exactly where she's coming from. ]

Hunt. Archery was really the only hobby I picked up. District 12 wasn't exactly big on free time.

is there much opportunity for hunting here in the city? [ if so, he's not really aware of it. ] i think there might be an archery range.

i was running a clan before i ended up here.
i like to work.

Not as much as I'd like, but I guess it's also not really necessary here. [ After all, part of the reason she picked it up was because District 12 had scarce amounts of food. ] I've been to the archery range a couple times.

A clan of vampires?

sounds like you need a new hobby.
i'd recommend crosswords.

[ a suggestion that teeters on the edge of sarcasm, but doesn't quite cross over. if he's being honest with himself, they've helped him. ]

yes. i've been with them for most of my life.

[ Also, what are they? But if she can find them, Katniss thinks she'll be able to figure them out on her own. ]

How many were there? In the clan and as a whole in your world.

you can get books of them at convenience stores.
sometimes you'll find them in the paper.

hundreds? some come and go, but most are part of a clan for life. we take in as many can fit in the hotel.
in the world, i don't know. countless.

Do you ever just want to get away from all those people? Only have to worry about your own well-being instead of 99 other people?

from time to time.
i'm used to it. i grew up with a big family even before the clan.
it's the quiet here that bothers me.

I know what you mean. I guess I never had a chance to realize how bad I am at sitting still before.

[ She had some time to realize that in District 13, but that was a different sort of stillness and quiet. She was healing then or dealing with PTSD; here, although she's trying to deal with a lot of similar things, there's no added pressure to lead the rebellion. It's just calm and peace, and it's unsettling as hell. ]

[administration]

what kept you busy before? besides hunting.

[ he has spent so much of his life doing something, working to achieve, filling his time with purpose. here, where his own goal can only be won through unfamiliar methods, he feels directionless in a way that he hasn't in a long time. and it's in long stretches of contemplation and stillness that he notices how strange it is to be on his own, his clan far away. ]

Taking care of my family.

Most recently it was the war. There wasn't really a lot of time for anything else, even before that. Not for the people from my district, anyway. The people in the Captiol had a lot of free time and probably numerous hobbies to fill their time with.

[administration]

do you have any family here?

No. I have a friend and two others from home, but no family.

[ Honestly, she's not sure what she would do if her mom or Prim showed up. It would be wonderful to see them again, especially Prim (the idea alone makes her heart break), but the idea of them cuddling with people is more off-putting than her cuddling with people herself. ]

Do you? Or any clan members?

[administration]

i have a friend who i consider family and what i'd call a tentative clan member.
there are others, but they're not friends.

[ not yet, anyway. magnus would certainly like to see that change, and maybe it will. the chances are higher here at the very least. ]

At least you've got the two.

[administration]

i probably wouldn't be here otherwise.

[ magnus has made all of this easier. raphael probably would have left a few short months after arriving if he hadn't had that reassurance and encouragement.

he feels bad that she doesn't seem to have had a similar kind of support. if he's right in his judgements, she, like him, is not quite as used to eudio's requirements as some others. that's the impression he got when they'd first met, and it hasn't changed. ]

have you made friends here?

That depends on how loosely you define friends, I guess.

It's a slow process for me.

[ She'll get there, though. She's too stubborn to let the requirements of this place get the best of her, especially with what's at stake. ]

i guess in this case i mean people who can help with your incentive.

[ That's... still a long process for her. ]

I'm getting there. I'm not really the most comfortable with physical contact.

me neither.
i think it's best to start simple. hold hands, sit with another person. it all counts.
